Third Sunday in Lent
February 28, 2016

Opening Prayers

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

Dear friends, God is with us.  As we connect here today with open hearts, the presence of Christ surrounds and affirms us.  We are one in this Divine embrace of Spirit.  As we open our hearts for worship, let us take a moment and reflect on those things we have said and done which we are proud of, and offer to God the things in our life that we have said and done that we wish to confess.

All: Most merciful God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word and deed. We have not loved you with our whole heart. We have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. We ask for your forgiveness and your unlimited mercy to embrace us and make us one with your loving presence. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ. Amen

B: May the God of love and power forgive you and free you from your sins, heal and strengthen you by the Holy Spirit, and raise you to new life in Christ our Lord. Amen.

Collect of the Day

Almighty God,
whose Son was revealed in majesty
before he suffered death upon the cross,
give us faith to perceive his glory,
that being strengthened by his grace
we may be changed into his likeness, from glory to glory;
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.

First Reading: Philippians 3:17-4:1
3:17 Brothers and sisters, join in imitating me, and observe those who live according to the example you have in us.  For many live as enemies of the cross of Christ; I have often told you of them, and now I tell you even with tears.

Their end is destruction; their god is the belly; and their glory is in their shame; their minds are set on earthly things.

But our citizenship is in heaven, and it is from there that we are expecting a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.  He will transform the body of our humiliation that it may be conformed to the body of his glory, by the power that also enables him to make all things subject to himself.

Therefore, my brothers and sisters, whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm in the Lord in this way, my beloved

Psalm 27
27:1 The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

27:2 When evildoers assail me to devour my flesh-- my adversaries and foes-- they shall stumble and fall.

27:3 Though an army encamp against me, my heart shall not fear; though war rise up against me, yet I will be confident.

27:4 One thing I asked of the LORD, that will I seek after: to live in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to inquire in his temple.

27:5 For he will hide me in his shelter in the day of trouble; he will conceal me under the cover of his tent; he will set me high on a rock.

27:6 Now my head is lifted up above my enemies all around me, and I will offer in his tent sacrifices with shouts of joy; I will sing and make melody to the LORD.

27:7 Hear, O LORD, when I cry aloud, be gracious to me and answer me!

27:8 "Come," my heart says, "seek his face!" Your face, LORD, do I seek.

27:9 Do not hide your face from me. Do not turn your servant away in anger, you who have been my help. Do not cast me off, do not forsake me, O God of my salvation!

27:10 If my father and mother forsake me, the LORD will take me up.

27:11 Teach me your way, O LORD, and lead me on a level path because of my enemies.

27:12 Do not give me up to the will of my adversaries, for false witnesses have risen against me, and they are breathing out violence.

27:13 I believe that I shall see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living.

27:14 Wait for the LORD; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the LORD!

The Holy Gospel

Luke 9:28-36
9:28 Now about eight days after these sayings Jesus took with him Peter and John and James, and went up on the mountain to pray.  And while he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became dazzling white.

Suddenly they saw two men, Moses and Elijah, talking to him. They appeared in glory and were speaking of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem.

Now Peter and his companions were weighed down with sleep; but since they had stayed awake, they saw his glory and the two men who stood with him. Just as they were leaving him, Peter said to Jesus, "Master, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah" -- not knowing what he said.

While he was saying this, a cloud came and overshadowed them; and they were terrified as they entered the cloud. Then from the cloud came a voice that said, "This is my Son, my Chosen; listen to him!"

When the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. And they kept silent and in those days told no one any of the things they had seen.

This is the Word of the Lord

A Homily will be offered by Bishop Deb

A time of intercessory prayer ‑

Creator God,
you call us to love and serve you
with body, mind, and spirit
through loving your creation
and our sisters and brothers.
Open our hearts in compassion
and receive these petitions
on behalf of the needs of the church and the world.

-Prayers for the World
-Prayers for those whom we love
-Prayers for ourselves

Holy One,
hear our prayers and make us faithful stewards
of the fragile bounty of this earth
so that we may be entrusted with the riches of heaven. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.
Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done,
on earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread
And forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive those who trespass against us,
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory,
For ever and ever. Amen

Concluding prayers and comments

Bishop: Linked by spirit, voice, and intention, we are in communion with each other and all with the Creator. We are wrapped in the love of God, all one in spirit, beyond the limits of time and space.  Around the world at this very moment countless prayers are being lifted, songs of praise are being offered, bread and wine is being blessed to nurture Creator’s dear children. United in Christ, we lift our prayers and praise to God and give thanks that we too are spiritually fed in this time of worship.

All: Loving God, we give thanks that we are all one; we are all fashioned by your Love; gifted by your Grace; and embraced by your loving Presence. Today as we connect with your constant, unbounded presence, may our lives be filled with your joy. May the blessings that we receive in this sacred connection and time of worship move us to be blessings in the world.

May we be the hands of Christ assisting one another.

May we be the voice of Christ, speaking up against injustice and unloving actions.

May we be the heart of Christ, reaching out with compassion and healing.

May we have the understanding of Christ, and see all as our brother and sister, and this planet as a sacred and holy world.  And, may the Holy Spirit guide us and empower us this day to accomplish our purpose with Love and abundant joy. Amen.

Priest: The peace of God ,which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his son, Jesus Christ our Lord.  And may the blessing of God Almighty, Creator, Redeemer and Sanctifier be with us this day and forevermore. Amen
